UFC 156 complete fighter breakdown: Jose 'Junior' Aldo edition

001_jose_aldo

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo takes on former lightweight kingpin Frankie Edgar this Saturday night (Feb. 2, 2013) in the main event of UFC 156 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

To see our complete fighter breakdown on "The Answer" click here.

"Junior" will make his long-awaited return to the Octagon after more than a year of inactivity. Injuries to both him and his opponents have kept him sidelined, but now he will attempt to defend his strap in the promotion's first pay-per-view (PPV) event of 2013.

After decimating every challenger the WEC and UFC could throw at him, the Brazilian now faces the biggest test in his young mixed martial arts (MMA) career. Does "Scarface" have the skills to crush Edgar and cement himself as one of the greatest fighters of all time?

Let's find out.

Striking

Jose Aldo is a vicious Muay Thai wrecking machine, embodying the "Art of Eight Limbs." He attacks his opponents with admirable violence and is constantly seeking to finish the fight. Of Aldo's 21 career victories, 13 are by way of knockout/technical knockout.

The most important part of Aldo's striking game is his devastating leg kicks, landing them with shocking consistency. When "Junior" throws a leg kick, he really turns his hip into it and lands on almost the exact spot every time, which makes it even more effective.

Aldo prefers to throw the leg kick at the end of a combination, when his opponent is backing away from his other strikes, because then they are more difficult to counter. If his opponents start reaching down towards his leg, Aldo will often fire off a quick high kick to discourage them.

Aldobrown8_medium

The most famous -- and brutal -- example of Aldo's leg kick mastery was against Urijah Faber.

Aldo destroyed "The California Kid's" lead leg, making his power punches and takedowns slow and useless. By the end of their fight at WEC 48, Faber could barely walk and "Scarface" had made a serious statement to the rest of the division.

"Junior's" boxing, while not as dynamic as his kicks or knees, is still very effective. He hits fast and hard, often landing a heavy right cross backed up by a flurry of hooks. The one problem with his boxing is that he doesn't jab very often, which would allow him to keep his opponents in leg kicking range even more than he already does.

Jose_aldo_vs

One of Aldo's most unique punches is his lead uppercut. The lead uppercut is a risky punch because there are plenty of opportunities to counter, but Aldo is fast enough to make it work. He also waits until his opponents have a healthy respect for his power before throwing it and sets it up with a left-hand feint.

Jose_aldo_vs

Perhaps Aldo's knees are his best weapon. He explodes into them and times them better than anyone else in MMA. "Scarface" attacks with dynamic knees at all opportunities, but particularly when his opponent is attempting takedowns.

Jose-aldo_rolando-perez_medium

One spectacular example of Aldo's dangerous knees is his fight against Cub Swanson. A skilled striker in his own right, Swanson was destroyed by "Junior" in just eight seconds. Perhaps he was expecting a kick, and wanting to counter with an overhand, ducked down as Aldo moved forward and rocketed into a flying knee, quickly earning himself a title shot under World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC).

Aldo's defense is almost as dynamic as his offense. His loves to stand in the pocket and slip strikes, before returning some of his own. His footwork is also very good and is constantly able to maintain a range where he can land leg kicks while his opponent cannot land punches.

Wrestling

Aldo rarely bothers taking his opponents down, choosing to knock them out instead. When he shoots for a takedown, he succeeds most of the time, in part because his opponents are shocked that he is shooting on them. While Aldo is proficient at taking his opponents down, it is perhaps the weakest point in his game, simply because he is elite everywhere else.

"Junior" is also one of the hardest guys in MMA to take down. He is very quick, his hips are very strong and is nearly impossible to hold on to. When these factors are combined, we get to see world class wrestlers like Chad Mendes and Urijah Faber look silly when they try to take the Brazilian down. Aldo's favorite way to stuff takedowns is to push the head towards the mat and turn away, making it very difficult to hold onto the champion's leg.

The factor that really elevates Aldo's takedown defense to the next level is his ability to damage fighters while they are trying to take him down. Whenever a fighter shoots in for a double or single, Aldo quickly hammers their skull with hooks and uppercuts. In addition to making the focus on their current takedown difficult, this discourages future attempts.

Aldo's ability to attack while his opponent is trying to take him down is particularly evident from the clinch. "Junior" may be incredibly difficult to hold onto in the middle of the cage, but against the fence, it is much easier for his opponents.

To counter this, Aldo has become an expert on capitalizing on small openings to throw knees. Kenny Florian tried to grind Aldo against the fence, and it was sort of working early, but then Aldo landed some big knees that seriously deterred "Kenflo" and made him much more hesitant. More recently, Aldo nearly decapitated Chad Mendes after escaping his grasp.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Aldo has earned a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) black belt under Nova Uniao head coach and Carlson Gracie-trained black belt Andre Pederneiras. Before his MMA career, "Junior" was an up and coming jiu-jitsu competitor. Despite this, we rarely see Aldo's ground game, as he is far too busy knocking people out.

The only time in recent memory that we saw Aldo's jiu-jitsu was against Mark Hominick. For the first four rounds, Aldo occasionally took Hominick down and thrashed him from the top, showing solid guard-passing skills and heavy pressure, also keeping consistent posture.

In the fifth frame, a battered Hominick took down a seriously fatigued Aldo and was able to land hard punches from the top, but despite Aldo's severe exhaustion, "The Machine" wasn't able to pass. "Scarface" maintained a fairly active open guard, vainly trying to kick Hominick off him. Unfortunately, this doesn't tell us a lot about his guard at full strength.

Killer Instinct

Aldo may be the very best finisher in MMA. He is able to capitalize on minute holes in his opponent's defense and quickly finish them. When Aldo hurts an opponent, he violently swarms on them, attacking until the referee pulls him off. Aldo's reflexes are also incredible, making it even easier to find those defensive gaps.

One example of Aldo's killer instinct would be his fight against Manny Gamburyan. Aldo easily handled Gamburyan in the first round, forcing "The Manvil" to shoot for a takedown. "Junior" lands a lead uppercut, stuffs the shot, and runs around to Gamburyan's back, before unleashing a vicious flurry of haymakers that put the Armenian out cold

2e4lu1j_jpg_medium

Aldo can quickly jump into any number of dangerous techniques. This ability to finish the fight at any moment raises him from a very good fighter to one of the best in combat sports.

Best chance for success

Aldo should leg kick Edgar as much as he possibly can early in the fight. Edgar's circling leaves him very open to leg kicks, so "Junior" should exploit that. The two most likely scenarios where Aldo wins are an early knockout and one where he does so much damage in the first couple rounds, that it negates Edgar's cardio advantage, and leg kicks really open up both options.

When Aldo isn't kicking Edgar's leg out from under him, "Scarface" should attempt either a knee or an uppercut every time "The Answer" bursts forward. Both strikes serve the dual purpose of defending takedowns and doing serious damage.

Once Aldo gets his kicking game going, Edgar's circling and footwork should be a shell of what they were earlier. When that happens, the champion can really open up with his boxing, If Edgar can't circle like he wants to, he'll be forced to trade with "Junior" at Aldo's preferred range, which is a very unpleasant place to be.

Will Aldo get the biggest win of his career, or will Edgar lay claim to the featherweight title? Find out in two days!

UFC 156 fight card: Rashad Evans vs Antonio Rogerio Nogueira preview

0evansnog

Two long-time veteran light heavyweights will finally meet this Saturday night (Feb. 2, 2013) as Rashad Evans battles Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in the co-main event of UFC 156 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Evans has competed since losing a unanimous decision to former friend and teammate Jon Jones last April, the only fighter to go the distance with Jones since he made his run to become champion. "Suga" has hinted a potential move to middleweight and challenging Anderson Silva, but he'll have to get past Nogueira first before that's even a possibility.

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira has had mixed results since moving to the UFC back in 2009. He's gone 3-2 while fighting irregularly, but is hoping that he can score by far his most significant victory inside the Octagon this Saturday night to potentially make a run towards the top of the division.

Will Evans secure his spot as one of the top dogs at both 205 and 185 pounds? Can Nogueira rise to the occasion and play spoiler? What's the key to victory for both men?

Rashad Evans

Record: 17-1-1 overall, 12-1-1 in the UFC

Key Wins: Quinton Jackson (UFC 114), Phil Davis (UFC on FOX 2), Forrest Griffin (UFC 92)

Key Losses: Jon Jones (UFC 145), Lyoto Machida (UFC 98)

How he got here: After a respectable career wrestling at Michigan State, Rashad Evans, under the wing of former UFC tournament champion Dan Severn, won his first five professional fights. This earned him an opportunity to compete on season two of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF).

Despite fighting at a weight class heavier than normal, Evans tore through the heavyweights on the show, eventually working his way to the finale where he earned a split decision victory over the significantly larger Brad Imes to become The Ultimate Fighter season two champion.

After some less than dominant split and majority decision victories over Sam Hoger and Stephan Bonnar, Evans finally found his groove, earning a technical knockout (TKO) over Jason Lambert with ground and pound and then scoring one of the UFC's all time nastiest finishes with the head kick knockout of Sean Salmon.

Evans would go on to have his now infamous draw with Tito Ortiz and would follow it up by defeating Michael Bisping via decision, sending him to the middleweight division. The victory would earn "Suga" a number one contender match against former champion Chuck Liddell and one massive overhand right would change his life forever, flooring Liddell, earning "Knockout of the Year," and earning him his first title shot against champion Forrest Griffin.

After a shaky first couple rounds against Griffin at UFC 92, Evans took advantage of a slip, pounced and pummeled his way to victory to take the title and standing atop the division. His title reign would be short, though, halted by Lyoto Machida in his first defense just five months later.

Since losing the championship, Evans rebounded nicely by defeating Thiago Silva and "Rampage" Jackson via decision, but an ill-advised choice to sit on the sidelines and wait for Mauricio Rua's knee to recover cost him badly. After nine months of waiting, "Suga" injured his knee while training and had to watch teammate Jon Jones crush "Shogun" and win the belt he'd had his eyes on for over a year.

Evans rolled through both Tito Ortiz and Phil Davis to earn a shot at his now former teammate, but would lose a decision to "Bones" last April. Now, he's got a potential opportunity to drop to middleweight and take on Anderson Silva should be defeat Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.

How he gets it done: Evans' secret weapon ever since losing his title was going back to his roots in the wrestling department. He was able to utilize it very effectively against Thiago Silva, Quinton Jackson and even former national champion Phil Davis, although he stepped off the gas against Jones.

Evans can also back up his wrestling with power. His ferocious knockouts of Liddell, Salmon and his title victory over Griffin should be a testament to that.

Expect "Suga" to dance around Nogueira early, utilizing his speed and movement and looking to land the power. The key for Evans is to get Nogueira to second guess. He needs to throw his hands when Nogueira is expecting a takedown and then shoot when "Little Nog" is expecting punches.

If Rashad can take Nogueira down, he needs to not only keep him down, but also to try and score some damage with strikes. He should be cautious to avoid the half guard sweep, but as long as he does that, he should be able fine.

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira

Record: 20-5 overall, 3-2 in the UFC

Key Wins: Tito Ortiz (UFC 140), Vladimir Matyushenko (Affliction: Day of Reckoning), Alistair Overeem 2x (Pride Critical Countdown Absolute, Pride 29)

Key Losses: Phil Davis (UFC Fight Night 24), Ryan Bader (UFC 119), Mauricio Rua (Pride Critical Countdown 2005)

How he got here: Being the brother of one of the greatest heavyweights in MMA history has its perks, and it didn't hurt if you're a very talented fighter as well. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira was competing in Pride Fighting Championships in just his third professional bout and he would win his first seven fights in the promotion, scoring significant victories over Kazushi Sakuraba, Alistair Overeem and Dan Henderson in the process.

He'd finally have his momentum halted by Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in one of the most exciting back-and-forth battles of 2005 and then would fall victim to one of the biggest upsets of 2007 when he was knocked out by Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou in just 23 seconds.

"Lil Nog" would get back on track, winning fights with Affliction, Sengoku and even Jungle Fights in Brazil before signing with the UFC and he would make a terrific first impression, knocking Luiz Cane senseless in less than two minutes with his southpaw boxing style.

After a controversial victory over Jason Brilz, Nogueira dropped two straight close decisions against tough undefeated (at the time) wrestling prospects Ryan Bader and Phil Davis. He was slated to take on Rich Franklin at UFC 133 but had to back out due to injury. After recuperating, he destroyed Tito Ortiz at UFC 140 and hasn't been heard from since, recovering from injuries in the interim.

Now, finally healthy, "Little Nog" is out for blood against Evans to try to really make his mark on the UFC's light heavyweight division.

How he gets it done: Nogueira's most obvious advantage against Evans will be his crisp technical boxing. He needs to do whatever it takes to keep this fight standing and stay in the pocket with the former UFC champion. Footwork will be key, and he can't put everything he's got into his strikes or he'll risk giving Evans an opportunity to take him down.

Look for Nogueira to keep circling with every strike he throws, avoiding getting cut off against the fence or giving Evans an opening to drive him forward into the cage or with a takedown attempt. If he can keep this fight in his world, he's going to be in very good shape.

If Evans takes him down, Nogueira has some of the best half guard play in all of MMA right now. His sweeps are terrific and all it takes is the slightest imbalance and he could reverse position against his veteran opponent. Don't be surprised if he allows Evans to pass to half guard just so he can be more active with his bottom game.

Nogueira shouldn't waste time going for submissions against Evans, however. He should just try to escape back to his feet and then go right back to work with his striking, trying to make something happen. Evans gets rocked in many of his fights and it could very well happen here.

Comcast Now Charging Customers For Formerly Free Converter Boxes

Not so long ago, Comcast customers who had to upgrade to digital set-top boxes were provided up to two free digital-television adapters so they wouldn’t gave to trash their old analog sets. Now, folks who still have those DTAs will have to pay $1.99/month for the privilege.

The charges have already started showing up for customers here in Philadelphia, in the shadow of the great Comcast tower (which kind of looks like a really tall thumb drive), and the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the monthly fee will be rolled out in other markets during the year.

With 23 million of the little black boxes spread around the country, that small-ish $2 fee adds up to a whopping $550 million a year extra in the Kabletown coffers.

The Comcast news comes in the wake of the Time Warner Cable roll-out of its $3.95/month modem-rental fee.

“The industry appears to be diversifying the ways in which it raises prices in an effort to minimize the sticker shock of a single headline price increase,” one analyst explains to the Inquirer. “Whether it is notionally a price increase for DTA converters or monthly broadband service, the real mission is to attempt to recover the soaring cost of video programming.”

Demian Maia: “Necesitaba volver a nacer. He regresado a mi grappling.

Al Iaquinta vs. Joe Proctor On Tap For UFC 159 On April 27 In New Jersey

021_al_iaquinta_large_medium

A battle of former Ultimate Fighters is set for "The Garden State" after Al Iaquinta's personal website announced his upcoming fight at UFC 159, which goes down on April 27, 2013 from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey

His opponent? None other than former lightweight teammate Joe Proctor.

Both men were competitors on TUF 15 under Urijah Faber and they both made it relatively far into the competition. Proctor was stopped at the quarterfinals after a loss to James Vick, and Al made it all the way to the finals before being submitted by Michael Chiesa at the live finale.

Time to regroup and rebound.

Following his defeat, Iaquinta has been held back by injuries preventing his return. He was called out by fellow TUF runner-up Mike Ricci and seemed open to the bout, but ultimately, Ricci was booked to face Colin Fletcher at UFC 158 instead.

Prior to the Chiesa fight, his only loss came to Pat Audinwood by submission for the Ring of Combat (ROC) championship.

Also at the TUF 15 live finale, Joe Proctor put on an impressive performance over team Cruz fighter Jeremy Larsen. Shortly into the first round, Proctor caught Larsen with a powerful knee and followed up with ground strikes for the technical knockout victory.

At UFC on FOX 5, Proctor lost a unanimous decision to Ramsey Nijem in a fairly lopsided affair. He is currently 8-2 in his professional career, with four of his eight wins coming by way of submission.

UFC 159 features a headliner between TUF 17 coaches Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen, who slug it out for "Bones'" light heavyweight title. In addition, Michael Bisping will bang it out against fellow middleweight Alan Belcher in the co-main event.

ONE FC's Dominance of Asian MMA To Continue With 24 Shows in 2014, Broadcast Live Across 28 Countries

One-110

ONE FC: 'Return of Warriors' is only a few days away, but Asia's biggest mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion is already looking ahead to 2014. In an exclusive interview with MMAmania.com in Kuala Lumpur, CEO Victor Cui gave a glimpse into his ambitious plans for the future.

"Our 2013 schedule is virtually complete, there are going to be 12 events and and two more summits so at the moment my focus is on 2013 when there will be 24 ONE FC shows and we are three quarters of the way towards getting those booked. We have events booked in almost every major city in Asia and we’ll be announcing the dates very soon."

The next ONE FC card is set to take place at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on April 5 and will be headlined by Kotetsu Boku vs Shinya Aoki. It will be shown live all over Asia by Star Sports, which broadcasts to 24 countries, and Cui thinks this is an important step forward for his promotion.

"If you think of the most prestigious sporting events in the world, be it Formula One, the English Premier League or the Olympics, they are all shown live on TV and this will be the first time that an Asian MMA event has been broadcast live by a major network all over the continent so it's a really significant moment for the development of the sport here. "

Cui has also been talking to broadcasters outside of Asia and says he has signed a number of deals and has plenty more in the pipeline.

"ONE FC is going to be available on television all over the world from Canada to Cambodia to France to Russia and it is also going to be available in multiple languages so there are going to be commentators talking in Khmer, in French, in Russian, in Behasa Melayu etc."

There are just three days to go until ONE FC's next show which is taking place at the Stadium Putra and will be headlined by a World Featherweight Title bout between Honorio Banario (7-1) and Eric Kelly (9-0). Both are URCC champions with exemplary records and Cui is particularly looking forward to this main event.

"In my opinion these are two of the top featherweights in the region right now, this fight was very difficult to put together, fans have been asking for this fight for a long time and these two guys have a very big fan following. I think what you are going to see is a full on, all-out striking display, both these guys know how to break down their opponent and then finish the fight with a submission but they prefer to stay on their feet and that's one of the reasons I am so excited about this match-up."

Cui confirmed in the interview that the winner of the fight between Banario and Kelly would get to defend their world title in Manila and says he also plans to introduce more national titles during the course of the year.

"We're going to try and do that in every country we go to, to crown a national MMA champion if the talent pool in those places is deep enough. Eventually you will see the Malaysian champion vs the Singaporean champion or the Indonesian champion and, if these fighters keep winning, they can rise through the ONE FC ranks to challenge for a world title."

Last year's 'ONE ASIA 2012 Summit' in Singapore has been described as a 'game changer' because for the first time in history it brought all the major players in Asian MMA under one roof. One thing to come out of that is the amateur infrastructure which is being set up in Malaysia at present and Cui hopes to squeeze to more summits into the schedule this year.

"I've put a lot of time and resources into the ONE FC Network and building the community and I want to continue to do that. We had some really good growth that came out of the last summit, we saw the launch of some amateur circuits and there is going to be a major announcement about that in Malaysia next week. We saw some business transactions and business deals with the gyms that we were able to co-ordinate with different suppliers and sponsors and we want to continue to be able to grow that this year with more summits."

The ONE FC Network includes all the major promotions in Asia such as Glory, DREAM, Road FC and the URCC and top camps including Evolve MMA, Tiger Muay Thai and Team Lakay and with both Saturday's headliners rising through the ranks at the URCC Cui believes that it is working closely with so many different partners has given ONE FC access to '90% of Asia's top fighters.'

While people still talk nostalgically about PRIDE, no other Asian promotion has ever had the capacity to move seamlessly from Singapore to Jakarta to Kuala Lumpur to Manila like ONE FC has done and Cui says he is only just getting started.

"Major sponsors like Tune Talk in Malaysia are looking to get on board, this Saturday's show is on course to sell out and I can't wait to reveal more about our plans for the next two years. It is amazing how quickly ONE FC has grown and it is only going to get bigger because we are going to every major city in Asia and are going to be broadcast live all over the world."

A Quest To Find The Best $1 Fast Food Burger

The winner.

The winner.

You’re hungry. You’re stranded in suburbia. You only have a few bucks in your pocket. Which fast food dollar-menu burger should you choose? To find out, you’d need $6 (plus tax) and to drive all over town taste-testing the dollar offerings from every chain. Do you want cheese? Bacon? Flavor? Two patties? Fortunately, someone has done the legwork for you, without setting foot outside of his car.

It’s not just anyone, either: it’s our former colleague Phil Villarreal, putting his taste buds and about eight bucks on the line to keep us all informed. Phil’s lucky enough to live within driving distance of a wide variety of burgerterias: Wendy’s, McDonald’s, Burger King, Carl’s Jr., and Jack In The Box.

He declared Burger King’s Baconburger to be the winner. “I’m thinking whoever came up with the term “thick-cut” for the bacon inhaled some “natural smoke” beforehand,” he notes. Yet the tiny bit of bacon makes the burger a lot less crappy than the four alternatives. The Carl’s Jr. offering was shriveled and inadequate, with a meat patty that “vanishes inside a heat lamp-ravaged bun, like a hockey puck on an NHL broadcast.”

Incidentally, if Phil finished all of these burgers during the course of his taste test, his total intake would have been 1,664 calories and 79 grams of fat.

Papy Abedi vs. Besam Yousef booked for UFC on FUEL TV 9 on April 6 in Sweden

120413_ufc_on_fuel_tv_weigh_in-37-mmc

Who says you can't go home again?

It's a war between locals at UFC on FUEL TV 9, where Papy Abedi will try to keep himself employed at the expense of Besam Yousef as part of the "Gustafsson vs. Mousasi" event on April 6, 2013 at the Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.

Kimura.se confirmed the welterweight pairing earlier today.

Abedi (8-2) saw his undefeated record go up in smoke when Thiago Alves strangled him at the UFC 138 pay-per-view (PPV) event back in late 2011. "Makambo" tried to erase his dismal debut loss from the memories of Swedish fight fans the following April, but once again got choked out when James Head did work at UFC on FUEL TV 2.

This could be his last hurrah if he's unable to secure a win.

Standing in his way is Yousef (6-1). Like his opponent, the Swede was tapped out last year on FUEL TV in his Octagon debut, falling victim to a crafty rear-naked choke courtesy of Simeon Thoresen. The loss snapped his undefeated record -- one that included five finishes in six wins.

Who takes it?

UFC on FUEL TV 9 will be headlined by a 205-pound battle between top contenders Alexander Gustafsson vs. Gegard Mousasi, while Akira Corassani vs. Robbie Peralta hook 'em up in featherweight action.

CES Kicks CNET To Curb, Gives “Best Of Show” Award To Dish’s Hopper DVR

Dish can now remove the asterisk.

Dish can now remove the asterisk.

The fallout over CBS’ idiotic decision to forbid CNET staffers from bestowing an award on Dish Network’s ad-skipping Hopper DVR continues to rain down on, with the folks behind the Consumer Electronics Show not only deciding to give Dish the award, but also ditching CNET as the producer of the annual awards.

For those of you coming into this story late, back in January, the CNET editors had already selected the newest iteration of the Hopper to win its Best Of CES award at the mammoth, international electronics convention in Las Vegas.

But then, after the decision was made but before it was formally announced, CNET’s parent company CBS told CNET it could not give the award to the Hopper because CBS (along with the other broadcast networks) is currently in litigation regarding the version of the device currently on the market. So instead, the award went to another product, the Razer Edge, and CNET posted a disclosure on the nominees page explaining why the Hopper had been removed from consideration.

It soon became public knowledge that the Hopper was the rightful winner of the award. In the wake of all this news, a CNET reporter quit rather than be told what he could and couldn’t cover, and Dish just decided to give itself the award, turning lemons into marketing lemonade.

CBS has continued to stand by its ban on products involved in litigation with the network, recently telling CNET editors they could write about but not review a new update to Aereo, a start-up service that streams live broadcast TV over the Internet.

Then today, the folks at the International CES and the Consumer Electronics Association declared that the Hopper and the Razer Edge will share in the Best of Show award.

“The CNET editorial team identified the Hopper Sling as the most innovative product of the show, and we couldn’t agree more,” said Karen Chupka, senior vice president, events and conferences for the CEA, which recently filed an amicus brief in support of Dish in its lawsuits with broadcasters. “The Hopper with Sling and the Razer Edge both represent the best of the exciting, innovative technology introduced at the 2013 CES. We are pleased to recognize both products as Best of Show.”

“We are shocked that the ‘Tiffany’ network which is known for its high journalistic standards would bar all its reporters from favorably describing classes of technology the network does not like,” said CEA President and CEO Gary Shapiro. “We believe that the DISH Hopper DVR is fully covered by the Supreme Court’s ruling in Sony Corp. of America v. Universal City Studios Inc. The simple fact is making television easier to watch is not against the law. It is simply pro-innovation and pro-consumer.”

And with that, the split between the Best of CES awards and CNET appears to be final.

CEA says it will soon be asking for proposals from other sponsors for its awards.

“CES has enjoyed a long and productive partnership with CNET and the Best of CES awards,” stated Chupka. “However, we are concerned the new review policy will have a negative impact on our brand should we continue the awards relationship as currently constructed.”

Woman Sues California Pizza Kitchen For $5 Million, Shocked That Frozen Pizzas Could Be Unhealthy

Sure, you could assume that because it’s illegal for restaurants in your state to use trans fats in the foods they serve, a frozen meal branded with the name of a restaurant chain wouldn’t have trans fats in it. You would be wrong, but you’re certainly free to make that assumption. That’s what a California woman who bought some California Pizza Kitchen frozen pizzas thought, though. Now she’s suing Nestle, the company that makes CPK frozen meals, for $5 million in a class action suit, intending to save us all from the hidden poisons that are actually disclosed on the back of the box.

Say the word “gift card” around Consumerist HQ and hackles will raise at an alarming rate. Which is why we’re greeting the news of a new gift card offered by Facebook with what one might call, “extreme wariness and trepidation.” Building on the social network’s recent launch of Facebook Gifts, these cards will be able to hold balances for multiple retailers and are reusable.

Facebook announced the new service today on its blog, touting the card’s ability to hold balances for Jamba Juice, Olive Garden, Sephora and Target. Which means the possibility of gift card shenanigans with not just one retailer, but four!

Here’s how it will work: After picking a pal to send a gift to, you will select the retailer you want to use to gift your pal from Gift Cards & Digital, choose a dollar amount and pay for it. Your friend will get a notification right away and receive a physical gift card in the mail a few days later.

Any other gift card balances you receive will be added to your existing card, so at least you won’t have a pile of plastic sitting in a drawer just waiting to be forgotten. A feature we’ll admit some begrudging interest in is the ability to view the balances for each retailer on your phone or desktop Facebook apps, so at least there (maybe) won’t be any nasty surprises when you try to use it.

There are still a lot of specifics that are unclear as of now — for example, will the gift card automatically deduct a fee after not being used for a long period of time? And will disputes be handled by Facebook or the retailers directly?

We’ve reached out to Facebook with those questions and will keep you in the loop.

DOJ Tells Anheuser-Busch That It’s Had Enough To Drink And Should Put Down That Grupo Modelo

Last summer, Anheuser-Busch InBev NV continued its attempt to buy every beer in the bar by buying a controlling interest in Grupo Modelo, the folks behind Corona, Modelo, and Pacifico, among others. But today, the Justice Dept. decided that AB InBev might be getting too drunk on beer company acquisitions.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the DOJ filed an antitrust suit this morning aimed at blocking the $20.1 billion deal that would have given AB InBev, which already owns a 50% non-controlling stake in Grupo Modelo, ownership of the entire company.

The merger would have resulted in a combination of the nation’s largest and third-largest beer companies in the U.S. Together, the companies control nearly half of the beer sold in the country. To the DOJ, this consolidation means “less competition and higher beer prices for American consumers.”

Additionally, the DOJ pointed to Modelo’s importance in competitive beer pricing. The regulators claim that AB InBev and the folks at MillerCoors simply follow each other’s price changes instead of trying to compete on price, while Modelo has resisted the bigger companies’ lead in raising retail prices.

AB InBev disagrees and says it will fight the lawsuit, which it deems, “inconsistent with the law, the facts and the reality of the marketplace.”

Report: UFC veteran Assuerio Silva shot five times outside gym in Brazil

20120909_kdl_af2_196

Perhaps fighting doesn't solve everything.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) veteran Assuerio Silva was hospitalized earlier this week after getting gunned down outside his gym in Curitiba, Brazil. The alleged shooter, identified as Robson Freitas, is reportedly a former associate, according to Parana Online (via Sherdog).

Silva (15-8) hasn't competed since his technical knockout loss to Geronimo dos Santos at Jungle Fight 16 back on Oct. 17, 2009 in Rio. The 38-year-old heavyweight is perhaps best known for making Tim Sylvia shit his pants at UFC Fight Night 3 way back in 2006.

I wish I could say I was joking.

Anyway, Silva finished 0-3 inside the Octagon, tapping to Brandon Vera and going down on points against Cheick Kongo following his crappy performance opposite "The Maine-iac." The former Chute Boxe star remains hospitalized in serious condition and no other details regarding Freitas were made available.

As always, stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more details on this developing story as they become available.

Customer Sues L.A. Fitness, Says Pervy Trainers Gave Her ‘Suggestive’ Exercises

(CBS 11)

(CBS 11)

No one expects their workout with a personal trainer to be comfortable, but they also don’t expect to be sexually harassed, either. A Dallas woman is suing her local branch of L.A. Fitness, claiming that two different trainers at the gym made lewd comments to her and gave her what she considers “suggestive” exercises to do in front of them. Now she’s suing for Deceptive Trade Practices and Negligence, claiming that she kept up her end of the gym contract (paid her bills, didn’t break any rules) but that L.A. Fitness didn’t provide a safe workout environment.

When she switched trainers due to what she called “strange exercises,” and comments about her chest, the new trainer provided her with more of the same, as well as lewd texts. When she complained to gym management, they offered her $400––two months’ fees––but she wasn’t interested. “I would like to have these guys realize they can’t treat women this way,” she told the local CBS affiliate.

How Does Emmy-Winning Comedian With Her Own MTV Show Have $57,000 In Debt?

Comedian Sara Schaefer already has two Emmys to her name, and her new TV show Nikki & Sara Live just debuted this week on MTV. But fame and notoriety don’t necessarily equate to being smart about your finances.

“I’m on the verge of this huge thing happening, this TV show,” says Schaefer in a segment for PBS’ online series Modern Comedian [see slightly NSFW video above]. “But I’m going into it $57,000 in debt.”

Schaefer won a pair of Emmy awards for her work on the Jimmy Fallon show, though that has done nothing to get her out of all the money she owes to various creditors. There’s one card maxed out at $8,000, another for $13,000, a maxed-out overdraft line of credit at her bank, another credit card for a computer she purchased a few years back, $13,000 in student loans, and cash she owes to her father, which she describes as “More than $5,000… times two.”

“I have not been taught well on how to deal with money,” she explains. “And it is psychologically something I’ve struggled with my whole life.”

Like many young people trying to break through in the entertainment industry, Schaefer says she simply went “all in.”

“Every choice I’ve made has been with the idea that I would make it, that I would get there and get my big break,” she says, explaining that her mindset was, “I’m gonna totally fuck this up until it works out.”

Sara says she has no idea how much she’s paying each month in interest.

“When you have this much debt, you don’t realize how much you’re paying each month just to keep it afloat,” she tells filmmaker Scott Moran, who is not related to me because our names are spelled differently.

She says she’s her credit card companies’ favorite customer “because I max it out and then pay the minimum… They don’t ever want me to get out of this debt.”

That being said, Schaefer knows that no one forced her to get into this situation.

“It’s my own fault too, because I refuse to not live the life I want to live,” she admits. “When I want to do something or I want to buy something, I will find a way to make that happen.”

She doesn’t recommend that people follow her lead in financial matters. Instead, she says young people really need to educate themselves about credit.

“On the SATs, we all know what a fucking rhombus is, but we don’t know what APR stands for,” she jokes in her stand-up routine, during which she openly discusses her debt issues.

“If I could go back, I would definitely have made a lot of different choices,” says Schaefer, “but I don’t really regret it that much because it really is working out okay… hopefully.”

Delta: Just Because Our Website Says You Get Free Movies, That Doesn’t Mean It’s True

For his recent cross-country flight on Delta, Josh took Economy Comfort class: it’s a little comfier than Economy, but not as fancy as Business class. Delta’s website says that people in this class don’t have to pay for movies on the in-flight entertainment system, but Josh’s actual experience and his conversations with Delta about having to pay for a movie indicate otherwise.

This past weekend I flew on Delta from L.A. to Atlanta. Delta offers a mid-tier class of travel that they call “Economy Comfort”. You pay a little extra for these seats and while not as nice as business class you do get a few perks including a bit more legroom. This is the type of ticket I purchased.

Once we were in the air I used the personal entertainment screen in my seat to browse through the available movies on the flight. Delta says on their website that movies on demand are complimentary for travelers in Business Elite, First Class, and Economy Comfort so I was a bit surprised when the unit in my seat prompted me to pay $6 to watch a movie. I went ahead and swiped my credit card as I wanted to watch a movie.

After the flight I sent an e-mail to Delta’s customer service department and even quoted the test directly from their website:

Movies on demand are complimentary in the BusinessElite®, First Class and Economy Comfort cabins, and for customers in the Economy cabin on all international flights. Additionally, movies on demand are complimentary in the Economy cabin on flights to/from the Hawaiian Islands and Alaska. Movies on demand are available in additional language tracks which vary by aircraft and route.

This text is still on their website right now here.

Delta replied with the following, remarkably quoting the same text while at the same time saying that movies in Economy Comfort are not complimentary:

“Please know that movies on demand are complimentary in the Business

Elite, First Class and Economy Comfort cabins, and for customers in the

Economy cabin on all international flights. Additionally, movies on

demand are complimentary in the Economy cabin on flights to/from the

Hawaiian Islands and Alaska. While we would like to offer special

consideration in cases such as yours, we are unable to honor the many

requests that we receive from others in similar situations. We follow a

consistent policy to ensure that Delta is fair to everyone who travels

with us. Since the fee charged for the movie was correct, we

respectfully decline your request for a refund.”

I replied again and pointed out that it clearly states that movies are complimentary for Business Elite, First Class, and Economy Comfort.

Delta then replied with the following:

“I understand you feel I did not adequately address your concerns. I was

happy to review your comments again to see if there was something I

missed. Please know that movies on demand are complimentary in the

Economy Comfort cabins only on international flights, including Hawaiian

Islands and Alaska and not on domestic flights. Respectfully, there is

nothing more I can add. I am sorry to disappoint you, as I understand

this is not the answer you were expecting.”

It clearly states on Delta’s website (and in their first e-mail response) that movies are free in Economy Comfort. The regular “Economy” class is what gets free movies only on international and Hawaii/Alaska flights. It is right their on their website that Business Elite, First Class, AND Economy Comfort all get complimentary movies on demand.

If movies aren’t supposed to be free for Economy Comfort you would think that Delta would just admit that they have a mistake on their website and refund my $6, but instead they keep going back and forth with me (I received a similar response when I tried to contact their Twitter-based customer service as well). I even told them they could just give me some frequent flyer miles if the refund was too hard for them to process, but alas… nothing from them so far.

Is it a mistake, or is the wording ambiguous? If the website says what the Delta e-mail rep claims, then it should simply say, “Movies on Demand are complimentary for all passengers on international flights.” Unless there’s some sub-Economy class of human passengers who ride in giant animal crates in the cargo hold now.

Waitress Who Posted No-Tip Receipt From “Pastor” Customer Fired From Job

(Reddit)

(Reddit)

Earlier this week, we posted a story about a restaurant customer who not only chose to deny the waitress a tip, but also wrote “I Give God 10% Why do you Get 18?” on the receipt. Now we’ve learned that the server who posted the receipt online has been fired.

“I originally posted the note as a lighthearted joke,” says Chelsea, who was dismissed from her job at Applebee’s on Wednesday, as the story began to spread across the Internet. “I thought the note was insulting, but it was also comical. I posted it to Reddit because I thought other users would find it entertaining.”

Chelsea tells Consumerist that the receipt was actually not even for her table. Rather, the server on the receiving end of the note showed it to Chelsea, who snapped a photo of it later that night.

As posted originally on Reddit’s Atheist page, the image contained the customer’s full signature. Chelsea says she didn’t think to edit that out because she had assumed the name was illegible.

But the Internet is a remarkably curious place, so sleuths began trying to identify the self-described “pastor” on the receipt.

“All throughout the comment thread on the Reddit post, I withheld any identifying information,” Chelsea explains, adding that she provided an inaccurate physical description of the customer just to throw people off.

She eventually replaced the image with a version that did not contain the signature, but by that point, people were posting their guesses as to the customer’s identity.

“I had already started receiving messages containing Facebook profile links and blogs and websites, asking me to confirm the identity of the customer,” she says. “I refused to confirm any of them, and all of them were incorrect. I worked with the website moderators to remove any personal information. I wanted to protect the identity of both my fellow server and the customer. I had no intention of starting a witch hunt or hurting anyone — I just wanted to share a picture I found interesting.”

Her post immediately became popular on Reddit, and then multiple national news sources began picking up Consumerist’s write-up of the story.

Some time on Wednesday, Chelsea says the customer who had left the receipt contacted her Applebee’s location, demanding that everyone be fired, from the servers involved to the managers.

According to Chelsea, until the receipt story got out there, her time at Applebee’s had been without incident.

“I had been well-liked and respected,” she explains. “My sales were high, my managers had no problems with me, and I was even hoping to move up to management sometime this year.

“When I posted this, I didn’t represent Applebee’s in a bad light,” she continues. “In fact, I didn’t represent them at all. I did my best to protect the identity of all parties involved. I didn’t break any specific guidelines in the company handbook — I checked.

“But because this person got embarrassed that their selfishness was made public, Applebee’s has made it clear that they would rather lose a dedicated employee than lose an angry customer. That’s a policy I can’t understand.”

For someone who makes their living off of tips, it seems like the customer’s note was salt in the wound for Chelsea.

“We make $3.50 an hour. Most of my paychecks are less than pocket change because I have to pay taxes on the tips I make,” she explains. “After sharing my tips with hosts, bussers, and bartenders, I make less than $9/hr on average, before taxes.

In her job, Chelsea says she skipped bathroom breaks when things got busy, went hungry when she had to work several tables at a time, would work until 1:30 a.m. and then come back in at 10:30 a.m.

“I am expected to portray a canned personality that has been found to be least offensive to the greatest amount of people,” she tells Consumerist. “I come home exhausted, sore, burnt, dirty, and blistered on a good day. And after all that, I can be fired for ‘embarrassing’ someone who directly insults their server on religious grounds.”

Chelsea agrees with those who argue in favor of a payment system that doesn’t make restaurant servers reliant on tips.

“But the system being flawed is not an excuse for not paying for services rendered,” she adds. “I posted a picture to make people laugh — but now I want to make a serious point. Things like this happen to servers all the time. I’ve had worse tips just in the last month. People seem to think that the easiest way to save money on a night out is to skip the tip. But when you don’t tip a good server, that means that server might move on to a better job. And a worse server might take their place. When you tip a good server well, you are ensuring good service.”

As for the customer’s claim that they “give God 10%,” Chelsea says she’s “utterly baffled” at why someone would try to make a connection between tithing to one’s church and tipping at a restaurant.

“I’ve been stiffed on tips before,” she says, “but this is the first time I’ve seen the Big Man has been used as reasoning.”

“I can understand why someone could be upset with an automatic gratuity,” she admits. The customer’s bill had included an automatic tip of 18% because, according to Chelsea, it had been part of a table of 20. “It’s a plainly stated Applebee’s policy, and it is company policy for parties over eight. I cannot control the auto-gratuity at all; it’s done by the computer that the orders are put into, and the gratuity is not determined by the bill, but by the size of the party.”

Chelsea says that the customer told her manager that their reputation had been ruined by having the receipt posted on Reddit.

“If this person wrote the note, obviously they wanted it seen by someone,” she points out. “It’s strange to me that now that the audience is wider than just the server, the person is now ashamed.”

Even though she’s now without a job, Chelsea claims she has no agenda, nor does she have any interest in exposing the customer’s identity to the public.

“I was just trying to make a joke, but I came home today unemployed.”

So, for now it’s back to the job market to look for a new gig. Chelsea says she’s been waiting tables to save money so she could pay for college.

“In the meantime, hopefully I can find a job that pays more than $3.50/hr,” she tells Consumerist, “Or where people are willing to tip well.”

We are reaching out to Applebee’s for comment and will update if we receive a reply.

Ulta Has Secret Limits On Clearance Items, Won’t Sell Me 27 Hair Straighteners

No hair iron for you!

No hair iron for you!

Courtney was on a mission. It’s her job to find things for people at low prices, and then buy them in large quantities. For example, one day she learned that beauty chain Ulta had Big Chi Digital Hair Irons, which usually cost $169.99, on clearance for $49.99. Score! One of her clients wanted these, and there were twenty-seven of them in stock. Now, “Clearance” should mean that the store is trying to clear out stock, and should be happy if someone comes along and scoops up everything on the shelf. Right? Not at Ulta. They’d rather not sell items at all than sell them to Courtney by the cartful.

We pick up the story at one of the many Ulta stores in her area, as she’s checking out whether the clearance sale is on at this particular store.

I purchased one to check the price since this store didn’t have them marked as clearance (Ulta apparently prices uniformly across all stores). It was the right price so I took it out to the car to check my purchasing account balance and then headed back into the store and took all but two off the shelf heading confidently up to the counter to make my purchase. The manager was checking out another customer and blithely stated that there was a limit of four. I was taken aback since I had not encountered this at any other store. I just said ok, I’ll take four.

I explained what had happened in the store to my husband when I took my four irons out to the car. He then went into the store ready to do battle. When he walked in, the manager was openly talking about me where other customers could hear and was checking to see if I had mentioned purchasing the item from any other stores. My husband at this point asked the manager to show him where a limit on item quantity was stated. He was told that they reserved the right to limit quantity on any item. After some further exchange, they finally sold him four additional irons, gave him the customer service number and the manager gave him her name. As an added bonus, they told him that the store that had five irons on hold for us would no longer sell them to us since we had reached our limit.

I called customer service when my husband returned to the car and was essentially told that they could not override the store but that they would forward a complaint to the district manager. I asked about the other five irons that I had reserved at the other store and was told that I should be able to get them at the store since each one makes their own decisions. We drove 45 minutes with a cranky toddler in traffic to get over to the next store only to be told “you were told at the last store that you had reached your limit and that we won’t sell them to you.” I fought back this time and told her that they were clearance items, that there shouldn’t be a limit on items that they are trying to get rid of. She responded something about limiting all of their items, including their liters etc. I then turned to the other customers waiting in line and asked if they had ever heard of a company not wanting to sell their clearance items to a customer. At this point the manager told me to leave the store, that they did not have to put up with me. As I walked out I told her that I was going to leave a very negative review for the store and she simply responded that that was fine.

I understand a company wanting to limit items that they sell every day in the normal course of business and or on sale so that they have enough for the bulk of their customers, but when you put a product on clearance, that usually means you aren’t selling it. Hence you are trying to clear it out for whatever reason. I now know from my own research that Ulta has policies about product being purchased for normal personal use, however none of that was explained to me when they were dealing with me at the store. I am irate at the way I was treated by both store managers and that one has the power to tell another not to sell a product to me at the price they have it marked at. I was not using coupons or any other discount, nor did I ask for any additional discount. I have never been ordered out of a store. Apparently Ulta can afford to turn down large sales because I was prepared to drop over $1300 at the first store and over $250 at the second.

Another call to customer service was less than satisfying and I have yet to hear from the [redacted] district manager. I have a feeling that I won’t either as the manager at the [redacted] store said she called him and confirmed that they would only sell me four per day.

UFC Quick Quote: Demian Maia is dreaming of submitting Jon Fitch in 60 seconds or less

20120707_mjr_su5_100

"I needed to be reborn. I felt when I was hitting guys or going for a takedown at 185, sometimes it was like hitting a wall. Now in this weight division, it's more fair for me. He's able to mentally break his opponents because his will is big. There are other wrestlers with big wills, but I think he has one of the biggest wills. So you need to be aware because he comes to break you. Now that I learned I'm able to do well with boxing, I was able to train more jiu-jitsu again. I've come back to my grappling. My dream is to take the fight down in the first minute and submit Fitch. That's my dream and I hope it comes true."

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight number one contender Demian Maia -- "reborn" at 170 pounds -- looks to inch his way closer to a welterweight title shot when he locks horns with the rough-and-tumble Jon Fitch at the UFC 156 pay-per-view (PPV) event this Saturday night (Feb. 2, 2013) in Las Vegas, Nevada. While Maia (17-4) tells ESPN he's dreaming of a quick submission finish, Fitch (24-4) has only been tapped once in his mixed martial arts (MMA) career, a debut loss to Mike Pyle way back in 2002. Will the Brazilian's dream come true in "Sin City," or will Fitch make their three-round battle a nightmare?

TUF 17 ratings: Episode two pulls 0.9 rating and 1.27 million viewers

Ufc-tuf17-generic

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was back in action last Tuesday night (Jan. 29, 2013) with episode two of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 17: "Team Jones vs. Team Sonnen" on the FX channel. If you missed it (shame on you), click here for our full results and recap.

When all was said and done, "Ambush" was good enough for a 0.9 rating and 1.27 million viewers, an audience drop of 16 percent from week one, according to a report from UFC President Dana White's bestie, Dave Meltzer, over at MMA Fighting.

It placed fifth in its time slot on cable in the 18-49 demographic, doing a 0.7. Its main sports competition was college basketball on ESPN, which did 1.71 million viewers head-to-head, but was slightly behind at an 0.6 in the most sought after demographic.

The report also indicates that TUF 17 continues to outpace its Friday night predecessors (by a lot), but also comes up just a bit short compared to the old days of combat sports reality television on Spike TV, which is cranking out a Bellator TUF clone later this year.

And it will be interesting to see those numbers when they do...

Do A Bit Of Research On Kickstarter Projects Before You Hand Over $100 For A $15 Watch

These watches were being sold for $100 on Kickstarter, but you could buy one online for $15.

These watches were being sold for $100 on Kickstarter, but you could buy one online for $15.

The projects looking for crowd-sourced funds on Kickstarter range from the absurd to the brilliant, but a few of them are just plain scams. One very questionable project is currently suspended over such concerns, but not until after it scored donations of more than $9,000.

“I have been making amazing watches in Switzerland for many years and have decided to do this on my own,” reads the pitch for this project listed by a man in Florida [via PledgeWeak.com, a site anyone in need of a Kickstarter-related laugh should check out]. “I thought it was time to make my own name known to the world.”

The man says he’s started production of his first model, a see-through, fully mechanical watch, which he describes as “stunningly beautiful.”

The man goes on to explain that he already has 200 watches made and ready to ship, with “parts for another 300 ready to be assembled, and are being assembled on a daily basis.”

Before the project was suspended, some 53 people each forked over $100 to get their hands on these “high-end” timepieces. Fifteen people paid at least $175 for higher levels of sponsorship and additional watches.

But as folks on Reddit noticed, the images on this project page look an awful lot like the ones for this watch that you can buy for $29.60 — for two of them. That’s right, these stunningly beautiful watches are going for $15/each.

So please, before you hand over your money to someone who is just trying to get their new rug/scarf/noodle truck business off the ground, do a quick search online to see if maybe you aren’t getting taken for a ride.

Now you must watch the video that accompanied the project, if only to hear the majestic music that plays during the many blurry zoom-ins on the watch face:
