Floyd Mayweather vs Marcos Maidana 2: Rematch targeted for Sept. 2014, 'big surprise' planned for May 2015

Who says "Money" doesn't give boxing fans the fights they want?

It seems instant rematches are all the rage these days.

Just a few months removed from consecutive win No. 46, the king of boxing, Floyd Mayweather Jr., is ready to get back into the ring against a very familiar face.

No, not this guy.

"Money" revealed during a recent interview with LATen Media (via ESPN) that he will likely be granting Marcos Maidana an instant rematch on Sept. 13, 2014. He also confirmed that he would be back in the squared circle eight months later against an opponent who would surprise everyone.

Check it out:

"Sept. 13, back to business, Marcos Maidana-Floyd Mayweather, part 2. And then in May, I'm fighting in May and I'll have a big surprise for ya'll."

Maidana gave the undefeated (46-0) champion all he could handle during their 12-round slugfest on May 3, 2014, at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada (video highlights here). Despite the valiant effort, "El Chino" came up short on the judges' scorecards, though proved to be Mayweather's toughest challenge in recent years.

Perhaps that's the reason "Money" felt compelled to grant the Argentinean an instant do-over. Of course, this massive payday probably had a lot to do with it, too.

Though I can think of at least one person who won't be happy with this news.

But, according to Maidana -- who would become just the second man to receive a rematch against Mayweather -- the fight isn't final just yet, as negotiations are still ongoing; though an official announcement is expected in the coming days.

Amir Khan was believed to be the leading frontrunner to be the next challenger for Mayweather; however, it seems that his winning performance against Luis Collazo -- which took place on the under card of Mayweather vs. Maidana 1 -- wasn't enough to garner "Money's" interest.

Keep it tuned to MMAmania.com as more details regarding this potential rematch become available.
