Looking to steer out of a two-fight losing skid -- even though he turned in solid performances in both matches -- Akira Corassani returned to the Octagon tonight (Sat., Jan. 24, 2015) against Sam Sicilia to kickoff the main card of UFC on FOX 14, which took place inside Tele2 Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.
Unfortunately for the Swede, he was unable to get the job done in front of a proud hometown crowd. That's because Sicilia, winner of two of his last three bouts, ended Corassani's night early with a crushing first round knockout.
To start the 145-pound match up, Corassani came out pumping his jab and looking to establish cage control. Sicilia countered with a nice left hand that backed Corassani to the cage, who landed a flush right hand to get the action back to the center of the Octagon.
Sicilia landed a nice kick, but Corassani countered with another solid strike. Corassani missed with a spinning back kick, but connected with a nice uppercut inside shortly thereafter. Sicilia was throwing with bad intentions, and in a furious back-and-forth flurry, he finally connected with a huge right that floored Corassani, who fell to the canvas unconscious.
Sicilia landed one last head bouncer just for good measure, scoring a devastating first round knockout.
Ouch.
