How's this possible? HOW'S THIS POSSIBLE?
Less than six months after a horrific near-death experience, Joe Riggs plans to return to the Octagon to fight Ben Saunders in a Welterweight showdown planned for UFC on FOX 13 from U.S. Airways Center in Phoenix, Ariz., on Dec. 13, 2014.
Talk about "Diesel."
Riggs was supposed to make his Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) return after an eight-year hiatus against Paulo Thiago at UFC Fight Night 51 earlier this month; however, Riggs accidentally blasted a whole through his hand when he was cleaning his gun.
It was a catastrophic injury (see graphic pics here), which also destroyed his leg (see graphic video here).
Nonetheless, he plans to get back in the cage sooner than later, a modern mixed martial arts (MMA) miracle of there ever was one. And he'll hope to build on his current six-fight win streak, which includes five finishes, as well as a "Fight Master" moniker after his tournament victory over Mike Bronzoulis at Bellator 106 in Nov. 2013.
Saunders, meanwhile, recently made his own triumphant return to the world's leading MMA promotion, submitting Chris Heatherly in the first round at UFC Fight Night 49 just last month.
"Killa B" has won four of his last five matches since July 2012, his only loss during that stretch a brutal head kick knockout courtesy of Bellator 170-pound wrecking machine, Douglas Lima, back in Sept. 2013.
UFC on FOX 13 is already shaping up to be quite a fine primetime special, with a trio of meaningful Heavyweight showdowns planned, including Junior Dos Santos vs. Stipe Miocic, Alistair Overeem vs. Stefan Struve and Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Matt Mitrione, among others.
