UFC Fight Night 51: Wendell Oliveira won't drop 'War Machine' nickname after Christy Mack attack

Sorry, Jon Koppenhaver, but it looks like you're going to have to find a new nickname, because "War Machine" should be represented by a true fighter.

What's in a name? Quite a bit, if it happens to be "War Machine."

Jon Koppenhaver, who legally changed his name to the aforementioned moniker during his stint with Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), recently put pretty much the worst dirt he could on his name after he allegedly beat up his ex-girlfriend, Christy Mack, inside her Las Vegas home.

See the graphic aftermath here.

But Jon isn't the only mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter who bears the nickname, as Wendell Oliveira -- who makes his Octagon debut this Saturday night (Sept. 13, 2014) at UFC Fight Night 51 in Brasilia, Brazil -- also has it.

As he recently told MMA Fighting, don't expect him to change it after Koppenhaver tarnished it, saying that he is the only true "War Machine" because he honors the sport and the name, which means Jon has to go and find a new one.

Check it out:

"That was awful. When the news came out, a lot of friends called me asking what happened because the stories had no photo in Brazil. I'm in Brazil, he's in the United States. We're not the same person. I won't change my nickname because I'm the real ‘War Machine.' I finish my fights, that's who I am. He's not a ‘War Machine.' I honor this name, he doesn't honor the sport. He has to find a new nickname for himself."

After evading police for a couple of days, "War Machine," Koppenhaver was eventually captured by U.S. Marshals on Aug. 15, 2014 in Simi Valley, California.

Better luck next time, "Dog."

He was then extradited to Las Vegas for his first hearing. Ironically enough, despite claiming he had legally changed his name to "War Machine," he denied doing so when asked by the judge. His lawyer added that "War Machine'" is simply a "character" that doesn't reflect the real person that is Koppenhaver.

Despite what name he's going by these days, the former Bellator fighter is now behind bars and may be there for quite some time. As for Wendell, he'll continue to carry the "War Machine" name and will do his best to always bring honor to it, and his reputation, too.

What say you Maniacs, do you agree with Wendell's decision to hold on to the moniker?
