The UFC 162 pay-per-view (PPV) numbers are in....and they aren't quite what UFC President Dana White was hoping for.
Based on industry trends, White had been predicting something along the lines of 800,000 buys for the event, which featured a middleweight title fight between longtime champion Anderson Silva and undefeated challenger Chris Weidman. Instead, the event is estimated by industry insider Dave Meltzer to have brought in approximately 550,000 total PPV buys.
While it's not the number the UFC President was shooting for, UFC 162 still managed to come in at a tie for the number two bestselling pay-per-view in 2013 thus far, coming in behind UFC 158: 'St. Pierre vs Diaz's massive 950,000 buys and tying UFC 159's amount which featured Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen.
UFC 162 saw one of the most talked about upsets in MMA history as Weidman was able to take Silva down in the first round and then knock the clowning champion out cold with a left hook on the feet in the second minute of round two.
Weidman wasn't much of a known commodity heading into the fight, but the rematch at UFC 168, which will also feature a Ronda Rousey title defense for the co-main event at the end of the year, has all the makings of a bonkers PPV number
Here's the estimated buyrates for the 2013 PPVs thus far:
UFC 162: 550,000 (Silva vs Weidman)
UFC 161: 150,000 (Evans vs Henderson)
UFC 160: unknown (Velasquez vs Bigfoot 2)
UFC 159: 550,000 (Jones vs Sonnen)
UFC 158: 950,000 (St. Pierre vs Diaz)
UFC 157: 450,000 (Rousey vs Carmouche)
UFC 156: 330,000 (Aldo vs Edgar)
