While he did lose the biggest fight of his life to Michael Bisping at UFC 159, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight Alan Belcher should just be happy he can see.
Saturday's (April 27, 2013) UFC 159 co-main event between Bisping and Belcher was an underwhelming contest while it lasted, but the ending came in frightening fashion when an accidental eye poke from "The Count" late in the third round hit Belcher directly in his surgically repaired right eye.
Fortunately, there was no severe damage to the eye itself -- all that was needed was eight stitches on the eyelid to close to wound caused by the poke.
"I'm ok...Just got back from E.R.," Belcher wrote on his official Twitter account early Sunday morning. "8 stitches in eyelid. Disappointed. To my real supporters, I'm sorry, thank you once again."
Belcher underwent surgery to the very same eye that was poked back in 2010 when he suffered a detached retina in training. It took a long time for "The Talent" to recover from the injury and start fighting on a consistent basis against, but luckily it seems this latest injury is no where close to being as severe as the previous one.
After nearly three-rounds of fighting, Bisping connected with the poke with just over 20 seconds left in the fight and referee Herb Dean called an end to the contest, forcing the fight to go a rare technical decision, which Bisping won unanimously.
The defeat dropped Belcher to 0-2 in his last two fights and he will have a good amount of time to reflect on his performance as the 28-year-old has received an indefinite medical suspension from the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board (NJSACB).
