The UFC on FUEL TV 7: "Barao vs. McDonald" event going down today (Sat., Feb. 16, 2013) at Wembley Stadium in London, England, featured Iceland's own, Gunnar Nelson, looking to keep his spotless record intact against cagey veteran Jorge Santiago.

This represented the Brazilian's first fight back in the UFC after over a year away when he dropped two bouts upon his second return to the promotion. He's no gatekeeper but this did represent a difficult that would be quite telling on his career prospects.

Which makes it bad news for him that Nelson was so effective in his offense.

Gunnar was a better striker, a better grappler, and worked a better submission game. He passed Santiago's guard, no easy task according to color commentator Kenny Florian, before moving from half guard to full mount. After a fairly even first round, Nelson did work in the second.

The third round saw Santiago let loose and land a few clubbing blows but his gas tank was nearly empty after having been on his back with a full grown man on top of him. That left him vulnerable and Nelson was all too eager to capitalize with hard uppercuts and wild looping punches.

"Sandman" blasted back with everything he had towards the end but it was too little too late. The lack of power left in his hands doomed him to the finish, a unanimous decision loss by scores of 29-28, 29-28, and 30-27.
