I wouldn't go so far as to call the division "deep," but at least Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is recruiting the cream of the crop when it comes to the best 135-pound fighters in women's mixed martial arts (MMA).
Sara McMann and Alexis Davis, come on down!
The lovely ladies were officially announced as part of the ZUFFA family on today's UFC 157 media conference call, which means the winner of Ronda Rousey vs. Liz Carmouche in the main event of the Feb. 23 pay-per-view (PPV) in Anaheim will already be looking over her shoulder when the action comes to a halt at the Honda Center.
McMann (6-0) scored a silver medal in the 2004 Summer Olympics in yep, you guessed it, wrestling. You know, that sport that was taken out back and shot in the head earlier today by the IOC (see why here). After turning pro in early 2011, McMann racked up six straight victories, including a unanimous decision win over Shayna Baszler for Invicta Fights last summer.
Joining her is Davis (13-5), a well-traveled veteran who finds her way into the Octagon after racking up notable wins in Invicta Fights as well as Strikeforce. The "Ally-Gator" holds finishes over Amanda Nunes and Hitomi Akano, among others.
Who will they fight? Possibly each other, but nothing has been confirmed at this time.
Two women who are fighting are Miesha Tate and Cat Zingano, who lock horns at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 17 Finale this April. Could the winner of that bout face the winner of Rousey vs. Carmouche?
Time will tell.
