The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) season 5 finalist Manny Gamburyan is reportedly out of his scheduled featherweight bout against Chad Mendes at UFC 157: "Rousey vs. Carmouche" due to a training injury that resulted in a broken thumb and fractured elbow.
With the event set to take place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., on Feb. 23, 2013, it is unknown at this time if Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) officials will be able to find a replacement to face Mendes.
Melissa Segura of Sports Illustrated reported news of the injury via Twitter; however, UFC officials have yet to confirm Gamburyan's withdrawal from the event.
Gamburyan (12-7) has not fought since August 2012, where he won a unanimous decision over Michihiro Omigawa at UFC on FOX 4: "Shogun vs. Vera". The victory ended a three-fight losing streak for "The Anvil," and marked his first UFC victory since April 2008.
Mendes (13-1) faces a similar situation to his last bout at UFC on FX 6 when his scheduled opponent, Hacran Dias, was forced off the card due to injury just eight days before the event and was replaced by UFC newcomer Yaotzin Meza. "Money" went on to win the fight by knockout, which marked his second consecutive first-round finish.
The 27-year-old was scheduled to face Gamburyan on the main card of the event, which airs on pay-per-view (PPV). The preliminary portion of the card will be broadcasted on FX and streamed on Facebook.
UFC 157: "Rousey vs. Carmouche" is headlined by the first ever UFC women's bantamweight championship bout as Ronda Rousey attempts to defend her UFC title for the first time against Liz Carmouche. The supporting cast on the card featuress a light heavyweight contenders bout of Dan Henderson vs. Lyoto Machida and a bantamweight rematch between Urijah Faber and Ivan Menjivar.
MMAmania.com will have pass along further details of a potential Gamburyan replacement when they become available.
