We may be celebrating more than just our Independence this summer.
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva and his team are currently "negotiating" a 185-pound title defense against Chris Weidman, which would likely take place at the promotion's annual Fourth of July weekend extravaganza in Las Vegas, Nevada.
That's according to report from Tatame.com.
If this bout materializes, it will be a full year since "The Spider" defended his title, a second-round technical knockout win over Chael Sonnen last July. The Brazilian took time out of his vacation to beat the brakes off Stephan Bonnar at UFC 153 but since then, has shown no real sense of urgency to get back inside the Octagon.
Especially when it comes to fighting Weidman.
The "All American" is nothing if not persistent, and "drove Ed Soares crazy" trying to book himself into a middleweight title fight. Either his constant stalking paid off, or the promotion couldn't find a suitable candidate to try to dethrone the sport's top pound-for-pound fighter.
Vitor Belfort, Luke Rockhold and Hector Lombard, among others, are all spoken for.
Of course, nothing is official at this time and no signatures have been obtained; however, at least we know we've already got an immediate rematch clause built into this proposed fight if and when it ever tales place. Weidman just has to beat Silva and cage fighting must get legalized in New York.
