Frank Mir headed to New Mexico to train under Greg Jackson for Daniel Cormier UFC on Fox 7 fight

It appears the Jackson-Winkeljohn Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) gym will soon have another elite fighter training under its roof.

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir has revealed he will head down to Albuquerque, New Mexico, for his upcoming eight-week fight camp ahead of his UFC on FOX 7 fight against Strikeforce import Daniel Cormier.

So why the move from Las Vegas to "The Land of Enchantment?"

For Mir, it was all about 'changing things up' for the first time in a long time and wanting to see firsthand just what makes fighters coming out of the famed camp so successful.

Mir broke the news to ESPN:

"I've always felt I have great trainers so there was no reason to leave, but my wife and I were talking about how I needed to change things up. One of the things was maybe I should get out of town and get more focused. I've always been impressed with Greg Jackson's game planning. I figured, before I retire, I want to be a part of that and see what makes this guy so successful."

Known as one of the great minds in MMA, Greg Jackson --along with lead striking instructor Mike Winkeljohn -- have produced plenty of past and current champions for the UFC and other MMA organizations such as Jon Jones, Carlos Condit, and Rashad Evans, among others.

Longtime UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre has also attributed some of his success to his time spent training under Jackson.

Despite the move, Mir's longtime head trainer Jimmy Gifford will be in his corner, as well.

Turning his attention to Cormier, Mir says though his fight credentials can't be ignored, it is important to remember "DC" has done most of his damage in the now-defunct Strikeforce organization and says the former Olympian doesn't sound like a confident heavyweight fighter considering he's already looking forward to "kicking Jon Jones' ass" in the 205-pound division.

"Level of competition is important. He's done most of his damage in Strikeforce. Not to downplay Strikeforce, but it's not the UFC. I think it's going to be another one of those things where people are destined to be disappointed. After our fight, he's already said he's going to 205 pounds. That doesn't sound like a confident guy who wants to stay at heavyweight."
