WrestleMania!
Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) featherweight number one contender Chad Mendes was yanked from the upcoming UFC 157 pay-per-view (PPV) event when opponent Manny Gamburyan mucked up his elbow and exited stage left.
And it wasn't long before "Money" cashed in his next opponent.
Stepping up to the plate is former lightweight gatekeeper Clay Guida, who yesterday agreed to face Mendes at the promotion's UFC on FOX 7 fight card, scheduled for April 20, 2013 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California, according to a report from USA Today.
"The Carpenter" hacked and sawed his way through Hatsu Hioki to eek out a split decision win over the Shooto veteran last month in Chicago. The debut win at 145 pounds snapped a two-fight losing streak to Ben Henderson and Gray Maynard, which prompted his trip south for the winter.
Unfortunately it's out of the frying pan and into the fryer.
Mendes (13-1) suffered the only loss of his career at the hands (and knee) of Jose Aldo last year in Brazil. The former World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) standout didn't spend any time feeling sorry for himself and immediately bounced back with consecutive knockout wins over Cody McKenzie and Yaotzin Meza.
Will Guida give him pause?
UFC on FOX 7 features a lightweight championship fight between Ben Henderson, looking to defend his world title against Strikeforce 155-pound title winner Gilbert Melendez in the Octagon debut for "El Nino," while another import, Daniel Cormier, will co-headline the event opposite former champion Frank Mir in a pivotal heavyweight showdown.
